Trade relations between Nigeria and the United States have entered another sensitive phase following Washington’s decision to impose a 12.5 percent tariff on selected Nigerian imports, citing concerns over alleged forced labour practices within certain supply chains.

The move comes even as both countries continue diplomatic engagements on regional security, counterterrorism cooperation and economic partnerships.
Although Nigerian exports to the United States remain relatively modest outside the petroleum sector, trade analysts warn that additional tariffs could reduce the competitiveness of Nigerian manufactured goods, agricultural exports and processed products entering the American market.
Officials familiar with the discussions say Nigerian authorities are expected to seek clarification through diplomatic channels while emphasizing ongoing reforms aimed at improving labour standards, transparency and regulatory compliance.
The development has generated concern among exporters who fear higher tariffs could discourage investment and weaken Nigeria’s efforts to diversify exports beyond crude oil.
Economists, however, note that the episode also underscores the importance of expanding African markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), reducing dependence on traditional export destinations.
Security cooperation between both countries—including intelligence sharing, military training and counterterrorism support—is expected to continue despite emerging trade disagreements.
