Facebook and Instagram owner agrees to sweeping changes after U.S. states accuse company of harming children and teenagers

WASHINGTON — Meta Platforms has agreed to a settlement worth up to approximately $16.68 billion with a coalition of U.S. states over allegations concerning the impact of its social media platforms on children and teenagers.

The settlement resolves claims brought by 29 U.S. states and represents one of the biggest legal challenges yet faced by the owner of Facebook and Instagram over alleged harms associated with social-media use. Reuters reported that the settlement was approved by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.

Under the agreement, Meta will make changes to how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram, including measures aimed at limiting potentially harmful engagement and strengthening protections for younger users.

Why Nigeria should pay attention

The case has implications far beyond the United States.

Nigeria has one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing populations of young internet users. Social media has become central to how Nigerian teenagers learn, communicate, entertain themselves, build businesses and participate in public debate. But it has also generated concerns around cyberbullying, online exploitation, misinformation, addiction, inappropriate content and mental wellbeing.

The American legal battle therefore offers Nigerian policymakers an opportunity to examine whether existing safeguards are sufficient.

The new global debate

The central question is increasingly becoming: Should social media platforms be treated simply as technology companies—or as powerful social institutions with responsibilities toward children?

The Meta settlement suggests that regulators and courts are increasingly leaning towards the latter.

The implications could eventually reach African markets as governments, parents and civil society organisations demand greater transparency from technology companies.

For Nigerian parents, the debate is particularly relevant. Digital access has expanded rapidly, but digital literacy and parental monitoring have not always kept pace.

The challenge, therefore, is not necessarily to keep young people away from technology. It is to make the digital environment safer.
