Former United States President Barack Obama has criticised the Trump administration over its investigation into Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, accusing the government of using federal power to target a political critic.
Obama’s intervention followed a federal search of Omar’s Washington, DC, home as part of an investigation into alleged irregularities in her decades-old immigration and naturalisation records. Omar has denied wrongdoing and described the investigation as politically motivated.
Obama argued that government institutions should not be used to intimidate elected officials because of their political views. His comments have intensified a wider debate in the United States over executive power, political accountability and the independence of law-enforcement agencies.
The investigation remains a matter for the relevant authorities, and the allegations against Omar should not be treated as established findings.
Separately, President Donald Trump’s decision to waive provisions of a newly enacted Russia sanctions law has drawn criticism from lawmakers concerned about Washington’s approach to Moscow and its support for Ukraine.
In an executive order dated October 16, Trump invoked the legislation’s national-interest waiver provision to suspend the application of certain sanctions and related measures. The move has raised questions about the balance of power between the White House and Congress in shaping US foreign policy.
Together, the controversies underscore deep political divisions in Washington over the use of government authority at home and the direction of American policy abroad.
