Unpaid arrears, pension concerns and unresolved welfare demands disrupt academic activities

JOS — Academic activities at Plateau State University, Bokkos, have been disrupted following the declaration of an indefinite strike by the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The union said it took the decision after what it described as the failure of the university authorities to satisfactorily address a six-point list of demands. Punch reported that the strike was declared as a total, comprehensive and indefinite industrial action, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration. Other reports identified unpaid arrears, pension-related issues and staff welfare among the outstanding concerns.

Another warning for Nigeria’s university system

The development is significant because it arrives against the background of a much larger crisis in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

Universities across the country continue to struggle with questions surrounding funding, staff remuneration, infrastructure, research support and the implementation of agreements between government and university unions.

For students, however, industrial disputes are rarely abstract.

A strike can mean cancelled lectures, postponed examinations, delayed graduation and additional financial pressure on families already struggling with the cost of living.

At a time when Nigeria desperately needs a skilled workforce to drive economic transformation, disruptions in university education carry consequences far beyond the campus.

The bigger question

ASUU’s action at Plateau State University therefore presents another test for state governments and university authorities: How sustainable is a higher education system where lecturers repeatedly have to threaten industrial action before welfare commitments are addressed?

The immediate solution may require negotiations between the university and its lecturers.

But the long-term solution lies in building a university funding and governance model capable of preventing the same disputes from recurring.
