Command says dismissed officers will face court as another officer is declared a deserter

The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed three officers linked to the killing of Anthony Obodo, a University of Port Harcourt graduate, in Port Harcourt.
The command said the decision followed an investigation that established the culpability of the officers. The dismissed personnel are expected to face criminal proceedings, while another inspector who allegedly fled the scene after the shooting has been declared a deserter.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 27 when a police patrol team attempted to stop a tinted Lexus vehicle around the Ada George area. According to the police account, the driver allegedly failed to stop, leading to a pursuit during which shots were fired. Obodo was killed.
The command’s subsequent disciplinary action is significant because allegations of police brutality and unlawful use of firearms have repeatedly damaged public confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.
Accountability matters
Dismissal does not by itself resolve the matter. The criminal justice system must now determine individual culpability based on evidence. But the decision to dismiss the officers is nevertheless an important institutional signal.
A police force that asks citizens to obey the law must demonstrate that its own personnel are equally subject to the law. For Obodo’s family, however, the ultimate demand will likely be more straightforward: Justice for their son.
And for the wider public, the case presents another test of whether police accountability in Nigeria can move from public promises to enforceable consequences.
