Former Sokoto governor shortlisted to lead ADC presidential campaign as party weighs experience, regional balance and nationwide mobilisation

The African Democratic Congress is moving closer to constituting the campaign structure that will drive Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi’s 2027 presidential bid, with former Sokoto State Governor and current senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal emerging as one of the leading contenders to head the campaign organisation.
Recent reports indicate that the ADC’s National Working Committee has shortlisted Tambuwal and Senator Austin Akobundu for the position of Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council. A final decision is expected from the party leadership.
The development places Tambuwal at the centre of one of the most important organisational decisions in the opposition campaign.
Why Tambuwal?
Tambuwal brings an unusually broad political résumé to the table. He served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 before becoming governor of Sokoto State, where he served two terms.
He also played a major role in Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign and has maintained political relationships across Nigeria’s major regions and parties.
Supporters of his candidacy argue that his experience, nationwide contacts and familiarity with campaign organisation make him particularly suited to coordinating the ADC’s 2027 presidential operation. But the decision is not without complications.
The regional balancing act
One of the major issues inside the ADC has reportedly been whether the campaign should be headed by a northern or southern politician.
Atiku is from the North, while his running mate, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, is from the South. Some party figures have argued that a southerner should head the campaign to create a greater sense of regional balance. Former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke has previously been mentioned in that context.
The consideration of Akobundu alongside Tambuwal suggests the party is still weighing both competence and geopolitical considerations.
More than a campaign appointment
Who eventually leads the campaign will matter because the ADC is attempting something difficult: turning a coalition of opposition figures and political structures into a disciplined nationwide electoral machine.
The 2027 election will require more than a popular presidential candidate. It will require:
- a functioning national campaign structure;
- strong state and local-government mobilisation;
- credible fundraising;
- effective communications;
- polling-unit organisation;
- coalition management;
- youth and women mobilisation; and
- the ability to coordinate the presidential and National Assembly campaigns.
That is the real job facing whoever emerges as Director-General.
Atiku’s next test
The ADC has positioned itself as one of the principal opposition platforms challenging the ruling APC. But opposition enthusiasm does not automatically translate into electoral victory.
The party must now demonstrate that it can manage internal disagreements while building a campaign capable of competing across Nigeria.
Tambuwal’s experience could be an asset. But if he gets the job, his greatest challenge will not be organising rallies. It will be turning an increasingly diverse opposition coalition into one coherent political machine.
The 2027 race is moving from political declarations to organisation. And in Nigerian elections, organisation can ultimately determine who gets the votes.
