Nigeria’s public health authorities are intensifying efforts to contain an Ebola outbreak after confirming one case in the Federal Capital Territory and identifying 53 people who had contact with the infected patient.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) disclosed the figures on Sunday, October 25, as contact tracing, laboratory investigations and surveillance continued.

According to the agency, the identified contacts include healthcare workers, the patient’s spouse and domestic staff, as well as personnel involved in collecting samples. The contacts have been categorised according to their exposure risk and are being monitored for symptoms.

NCDC Director-General Jide Idris said none of the 53 contacts had tested positive or developed symptoms as of the latest briefing. Monitoring is expected to continue for 21 days after each person’s last possible exposure.

The agency has also investigated a suspected case in Rivers State, which tested negative. Authorities continue to assess other suspected infections and strengthen laboratory and infection-prevention measures.

Genomic Finding Prompts Questions Over Source

Genomic analysis found a high degree of similarity between the virus detected in Nigeria and that identified in a case associated with Kenya. However, health officials have cautioned that this similarity does not establish where the Nigerian patient contracted the infection.

The confirmed patient, a 42-year-old woman resident in Abuja, had travelled to Uganda before developing symptoms. Investigators are examining the possible connection between the cases and the patients’ travel histories.

The development has renewed attention to cross-border disease surveillance and the importance of rapid reporting, testing and contact tracing.

NCDC has urged Nigerians to cooperate with public health teams, provide accurate information about possible exposure and promptly report symptoms through appropriate health channels.

The identification of contacts does not mean they have Ebola. Health authorities say monitoring is intended to detect any infection early and limit the risk of further transmission.

As investigations continue, transparent communication and public cooperation will be critical to containing the outbreak without fuelling unnecessary fear.
