This followed deliberations on the committee of the whole house and the third reading of the bill by the deputy clerk, Nasiru Magaji, during Monday’s plenary, presided over by the speaker, Jibril Falgore.

After careful deliberations, the House unanimously adopted and passed the Kano State Pre-marital screening bill 2024.

The majority leader of the house and member representing Dala constituency, Lawan Hussein, explained shortly after the passage of the bill, which was sponsored by him, that anyone intending to marry shall first submit himself for medical examinations.

He said the bill was passed due to the current situation where the state is battling different health issues, including HIV, as people go into marriages without medical screening. He pointed out that, the bill will safeguard the health of citizens by institutionalizing pre-marital testing to check the spread of diseases like hepatitis, HIV and sickle cell anaemia.

The House however, adjourned sitting to today in a motion moved by the majority leader, Hon Lawan Hussaini.
