DS Kalu

Uchechukwu Okoroafor, Abuja

In the wake of nationwide protests against bad governance that began on August 1, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, demonstrated remarkable foresight and leadership by advising the youths of South East Nigeria to refrain from participating.

His cautionary words, highlighting the potential for violence and the consequent loss of lives and property, resonated deeply with the youths in the region. This prudent counsel, met with commendable restraint and responsibility from the South East youths, stands as a testament to the power of wise leadership and the importance of peace for development.

Hon. Kalu’s warning was not merely a call to inaction but a thoughtful appeal for the preservation of peace and stability in the South East. He rightly anticipated that the protests, while rooted in legitimate grievances, could escalate into violence, leading to tragic outcomes. Indeed, as events unfolded, other parts of the country witnessed tragic losses and widespread destruction of both government and private properties.

This foresight exhibited by Hon. Kalu and the subsequent restraint shown by the South East youths prevented similar chaos and bloodshed in their region, and that decision by the South East youths to heed Hon. Kalu’s advice is worthy of high praise.

In an era where emotions can easily overtake reason, their choice to prioritize peace over protest demonstrates maturity and a profound understanding of the broader implications of civil unrest. Their collective action—or, in this case, inaction—has not only safeguarded their communities but also set a powerful example for others to follow.

The Southeast region, like any other, is not without its challenges. However, it is clear that development thrives in an environment of stability and peace. Economic growth, infrastructure development, and social progress are all contingent upon a secure and orderly society. The absence of violent protests has allowed the South East to continue its path toward development without the setbacks and scars that civil unrest invariably brings.

Moreover, the Southeast’s need for peace cannot be overstated. The region’s recent history, marked by conflict and strife as a result of separatist agitations, underscores the importance of maintaining tranquility. Peaceful conditions are essential for attracting investment, fostering education, and improving the quality of life for all citizens.

By avoiding the protests, the South East has positioned itself as a beacon of stability and a promising hub for future growth and development.

We commend Hon. Benjamin Kalu for his wise counsel and applaud the youths of Southeast Nigeria for their exemplary prudence. Their combined efforts have shielded their region from the turmoil that engulfed other parts of the country, especially parts of the North. As we move forward, let this episode serve as a reminder of the critical importance of peace in achieving sustainable development.

The Southeast’s commitment to stability is not just a triumph of wisdom but a necessary foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future.
