A Nigerian clinical associate professor of medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, has been elected as the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA) next president-elect on Friday.
Dr. Ogunyemi, a practising medical dermatologist in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and a visiting specialist in Labrador City since 2018, emerged victorious in the vote held between Nov. 20 and Dec. 4.

The election saw eligible CMA members in Newfoundland and Labrador choose between Dr. Ogunyemi and Dr. Susan MacDonald, a prominent advocate in palliative care.
“My track record in medical leadership, spanning 15 years, has provided me with expertise on pressing issues facing our healthcare system today,” he said.
“As CMA president-elect, I will advocate for a unified and respected profession, a robust healthcare system, and healthier communities.”
Dr. Ogunyemi will take on the role of president-elect pending approval at the CMA’s Annual General Meeting in May 2025, before becoming president for a one-year term in May 2026.
In his 15-year career, Dr. Ogunyemi has held numerous leadership roles at Memorial University, including serving as the inaugural Assistant Dean of Social Accountability from 2020 to 2023.
He has also contributed to healthcare governance as a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association Board of Directors and the CMA Governance Committee.
Following the announcement, Dr. Ogunyemi thanked supporters, colleagues, and family while also recognising his opponent, Dr. MacDonald, for her contributions to healthcare.
“Dr. Susan MacDonald has given many years of service to healthcare and palliative care in particular, and I thank her for participating in the campaign process.
