“Not Politics as Usual” — Obi Meets Makinde, Pushes Vision for a New Nigeria

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared that ongoing opposition consultations are about nation-building—not mere political maneuvering—as talks intensify ahead of 2027.

Obi made the statement after a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan, where both leaders held nearly two hours of discussions focused on Nigeria’s future.

Describing the meeting as part of broader national consultations, Obi said the goal is to forge collaboration across political divides and rebuild the country on principles of unity, security, and productivity.

“This is not politics for its own sake,” he said. “It is about building a Nigeria that works for everyone.”

He emphasized a shift toward a merit-driven system where opportunities are based on hard work—not connections—while also calling for urgent economic reforms.

“We must move from a consumption-driven economy to one anchored on production and job creation,” Obi added.

The meeting comes days after a high-level opposition summit in Ibadan and follows Obi’s recent engagement with former President Goodluck Jonathan, signaling deepening coalition talks.
