In a major shake-up of Nigeria’s education system, the Federal Government has officially exempted candidates seeking admission into Federal Colleges of Education from writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
Education authorities say the move is designed to encourage more young Nigerians to pursue careers in teaching and address growing shortages in the education sector.
Under the new policy, admission into federal colleges of education will now rely on alternative assessment procedures determined by the institutions and relevant regulatory bodies.
Stakeholders say the decision could significantly increase enrolment in teacher-training institutions, many of which have struggled with declining applications in recent years.
Experts have long warned that Nigeria faces a serious shortage of qualified teachers, particularly in rural communities and public schools.
The government believes the policy could help reposition teaching as a more attractive profession while improving access to higher education.
