The Inspector-General of Police has ordered an immediate restriction on Point of Sale operations within 200 metres of police stations nationwide.

Police authorities say the move is aimed at tackling corruption, extortion and suspicious financial transactions allegedly linked to some security formations.

The directive follows increasing complaints from citizens over illegal cash demands and unofficial payments around police facilities.

Security experts say POS operators have increasingly become critical to Nigeria’s cash economy, particularly in areas with limited banking infrastructure.

However, the new restriction has already sparked mixed reactions, with some operators expressing fears that the policy could affect legitimate businesses operating close to police formations.

Police authorities insist the directive is part of broader reforms to improve transparency and public trust in law enforcement.
