Peter Obi Pledges Single-Term Presidency

Anietie Udobit, Abuja

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has pledged to serve only a single four-year term if elected president in 2027, a declaration that has already triggered intense reactions across the political landscape.

Obi said his focus would be on stabilising the country, rebuilding critical institutions and laying the foundation for long-term national transformation rather than pursuing prolonged political power.

The former governor argued that Nigeria requires urgent reforms driven by discipline, transparency and economic productivity.

However, the Presidency swiftly criticised the statement, describing it as politically motivated and unrealistic.

Presidential allies questioned the practicality of implementing meaningful reforms within a single term, while some critics accused Obi of attempting to gain political sympathy ahead of the election cycle.

Supporters of the former governor, on the other hand, hailed the promise as a demonstration of selflessness and commitment to democratic accountability.

Political analysts say the debate highlights growing public interest in leadership style, governance philosophy and the future direction of Nigeria’s democracy ahead of 2027.
