“Pastor, Not President”: RCCG Breaks Silence As Pressure Mounts On Adeboye To Speak On Nigeria’s Crises

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has issued one of its strongest public responses in recent years following mounting pressure on its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, to take a more direct position on Nigeria’s worsening security and economic challenges.

The intervention comes against the backdrop of rising inflation, persistent insecurity, kidnappings, unemployment, and growing public dissatisfaction with governance. On social media, many Nigerians have increasingly questioned whether influential religious leaders are doing enough to hold political authorities accountable.

At the center of the debate is Pastor Adeboye, arguably one of Africa’s most influential Christian leaders, whose spiritual authority extends beyond Nigeria to millions of followers across the globe.

Critics argue that religious leaders who command such enormous followership should use their influence more aggressively to pressure governments into addressing pressing national concerns. Supporters, however, insist that the role of the clergy is to provide moral guidance rather than function as political actors.

In a widely circulated video message, Pastor Adeboye appeared to address the growing insecurity challenge directly, urging the Federal Government to hold security agencies accountable for results.

According to him, Nigerians deserve a country where citizens can travel, work, farm, and live without fear.

He reportedly suggested that security chiefs should face strict performance expectations in the battle against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent crime.

However, RCCG officials moved quickly to clarify what they described as misconceptions regarding the pastor’s role.

In a detailed statement, the church emphasized that Pastor Adeboye is neither a government official nor a political office holder and therefore cannot issue directives to elected authorities.

“The expectation that Pastor Adeboye should command the President or dictate government policy is unrealistic and misunderstands the constitutional roles within a democracy,” church officials stated.

The church also reiterated its long-standing policy of political neutrality.

According to RCCG leadership, the church comprises members from virtually every political party and ideological persuasion. As such, it seeks to provide spiritual guidance without becoming an extension of any political movement.

The statement also denied widespread rumors suggesting that Pastor Adeboye had endorsed particular political candidates or attempted to discourage lawful civic actions by citizens.

Political analysts say the controversy reflects a broader reality within Nigerian society, where religious leaders often occupy spaces of influence that extend beyond traditional spiritual responsibilities.

In times of national uncertainty, many citizens naturally turn to clerics for moral direction and public advocacy.

Yet experts warn that excessive dependence on religious figures can weaken democratic accountability by shifting attention away from elected institutions specifically empowered to solve public problems.

As economic pressures and security concerns continue to dominate public discourse, the debate surrounding the role of religious leaders in governance is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

For now, RCCG’s message remains clear: the church will continue to pray, advise, and advocate for national peace, but the ultimate responsibility for governance rests with those elected to lead the nation.
