National Assembly Summons Ribadu, Service Chiefs Over Rising School Abductions

Growing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria’s educational sector have triggered fresh legislative intervention as the National Assembly summoned National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the country’s top military and security chiefs to explain the government’s response to a disturbing resurgence of school-targeted abductions.

The move follows widespread outrage over the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that has once again raised fears about the safety of schools across the country.

Lawmakers described the development as a direct threat to national stability, education, and public confidence in government institutions. Several members of the National Assembly argued that despite years of military operations and increased budgetary allocations to security agencies, criminal groups continue to exploit vulnerable communities and educational facilities.

The latest summons reflects mounting public frustration over repeated attacks on schools, particularly in rural communities where security infrastructure remains weak. Education stakeholders warn that the renewed wave of kidnappings could reverse gains recorded under the Safe Schools Initiative and discourage parents from sending children to school.

Security analysts note that school abductions have evolved into a lucrative criminal enterprise, combining terrorism, banditry, and ransom-driven kidnapping networks. The National Assembly is expected to demand a comprehensive strategy from security chiefs, including intelligence coordination, school protection mechanisms, and measures to prevent future attacks.

For many Nigerians, the hearing represents more than a routine oversight function—it is viewed as a crucial test of the government’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s children and restoring confidence in public education.
