Protesters

Anietie Udobit, Abuja

The nation’s capital witnessed heightened civic activism as groups of young Nigerians, labour advocates, and public sector workers converged on the National Assembly demanding urgent government intervention in the country’s worsening security and economic conditions.

The protesters carried placards highlighting concerns over kidnappings, rising living costs, unemployment, and delays in the payment of civil service allowances. Many participants argued that ordinary Nigerians are bearing the brunt of economic reforms while struggling with inflation and declining purchasing power.

The demonstration reflects growing public anxiety over the combined impact of insecurity and economic hardship. Across several sectors, workers have expressed concerns about the rising cost of transportation, food, housing, and energy.

Participants also criticized what they described as inadequate responses to recurring security incidents, particularly attacks on schools and rural communities.

Security personnel maintained a visible presence around the National Assembly complex, ensuring that the protests remained largely peaceful.

Political observers note that public demonstrations are increasingly becoming a significant feature of Nigeria’s democratic landscape as citizens seek more direct avenues to express grievances and influence public policy.

The protests come ahead of Democracy Day celebrations, a period traditionally associated with reflection on governance, accountability, and the state of the nation.

For many demonstrators, the message was simple: Nigerians want visible improvements in security, economic opportunities, and public service delivery.
