ABUJA — The Nigerian Senate has rejected calls by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for the United Nations to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, arguing that Nigeria possesses sufficient constitutional institutions to investigate security incidents without international intervention.
The lawmakers described the proposal as unnecessary, insisting that security investigations remain the constitutional responsibility of Nigerian agencies.
Several senators argued that inviting an external body to investigate a domestic security incident could undermine confidence in Nigeria’s own institutions and send the wrong diplomatic signal.
The disagreement has generated wider debate among constitutional lawyers and security analysts.
Supporters of an independent inquiry argue that high-profile attacks on schools require maximum transparency to strengthen public confidence.
Others maintain that strengthening local investigative institutions remains the more sustainable approach, especially as Nigeria continues reforms within its security architecture.
The Senate nevertheless urged security agencies to publish comprehensive findings once investigations conclude and called for accelerated implementation of school protection programmes across vulnerable communities.
Education stakeholders continue to emphasize that preventing future attacks must take precedence over political disagreements surrounding investigative mechanisms.
