INEC Eyes Mock Presidential Election as Political Realignments Intensify Ahead of 2027

Nigeria’s electoral landscape is entering a new phase as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced plans to undertake a comprehensive audit of its electoral technology infrastructure and stage a mock presidential election ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative comes amid growing political realignments, renewed litigation over the commission’s timetable, and increasing public demand for stronger electoral credibility following controversies surrounding the 2023 elections.

Learning from 2023

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan disclosed that the commission is considering a nationwide technology audit and simulation exercise to identify operational weaknesses before Nigerians return to the polls in 2027.

The proposed mock presidential election would not determine political winners but would instead test electronic accreditation systems, result transmission infrastructure, cybersecurity resilience, communications networks and logistics under conditions closely resembling a nationwide election.

According to the commission, the exercise aims to prevent a recurrence of the technical failures experienced during the 2023 presidential election, particularly concerns surrounding the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Restoring Public Confidence

Election observers have largely welcomed the proposal.

Civil society organisations have consistently argued that large-scale testing of electoral technology before polling day would improve transparency and reduce disputes over system failures.

Election technology specialists note that many democracies routinely conduct stress tests of voting infrastructure before major elections.

For Nigeria, where more than ninety million registered voters are expected to participate, comprehensive testing could significantly improve operational readiness.

Political Landscape Continues to Shift

While INEC focuses on technical preparations, Nigeria’s political environment continues to evolve rapidly.

Former APC National Vice Chairman Salihu Lukman has exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC), adding another layer of uncertainty to opposition politics as parties continue to negotiate alliances ahead of the presidential race.

Political observers believe the departure reflects broader disagreements over leadership, candidate selection and coalition-building within opposition circles.

With court cases surrounding electoral timelines still unfolding, analysts expect further political movements before party primaries begin in earnest.

Electoral Integrity Under the Spotlight

INEC also disclosed plans to strengthen cybersecurity safeguards amid growing concerns over artificial intelligence, digital misinformation and cyber threats capable of undermining election integrity.

Election experts warn that future elections will increasingly depend not only on ballot security but also on protecting digital infrastructure from manipulation.

Implications for 2027

Political scientists believe the commission’s decision represents one of the most significant institutional reforms proposed since the introduction of electronic accreditation.

If successfully implemented, the technology audit and mock election could become an important confidence-building exercise for voters, political parties and election observers.

However, analysts caution that technology alone cannot guarantee credible elections. Transparent administration, judicial certainty, political tolerance and effective security remain equally essential for peaceful and credible polls.

As preparations gather momentum, Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether lessons from previous elections translate into stronger institutions and greater public trust ahead of what promises to be one of the country’s most consequential democratic contests.
