Children among victims as overloaded vessel carrying farm workers capsizes on Goronyo waterway

SOKOTO — What began as another routine journey to the farm has become one of Nigeria’s most devastating inland-waterway tragedies of the year.

At least 50 people have died after an overloaded boat capsized near Gorau in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with local reports putting the death toll as high as 53 as recovery operations continue.

The victims were reportedly travelling to agricultural areas when the boat overturned. The tragedy is particularly heartbreaking because a large proportion of those on board were reportedly children, many of them between the ages of 10 and 15.

Reuters reported that witnesses estimated that about 40 of the victims were children, while 16 people were rescued.

Another disaster on Nigeria’s waterways

The Sokoto tragedy has again exposed the dangers faced by Nigerians who depend on waterways for everyday transportation. In many rural communities, boats are not luxury transport. They are the equivalent of roads.

Farmers use them to reach their fields. Children use them to get to communities and schools. Traders rely on them to move goods. Yet many of these waterways operate with limited safety infrastructure.

Overcrowding, poor maintenance, inadequate enforcement and the absence of life jackets have repeatedly contributed to fatal boat accidents in Nigeria.

The National Inland Waterways Authority has been involved in the recovery operation, while local emergency officials and community members continue searching for victims.

A tragedy beyond Sokoto

The disaster raises a national question: How many Nigerians must die on waterways before inland transport safety receives the same urgency as road safety?

Nigeria has enormous waterways that could support agriculture, commerce and rural connectivity. But without regulation, passenger limits, life jackets, trained operators, weather monitoring and emergency response capacity, those waterways can become death traps.

For the families of Goronyo, however, the immediate issue is more personal. They are waiting for bodies to be recovered. And for many families, there may be no body to bury.
