Three Mexicans and seven Nigerians face charges over alleged industrial-scale drug production

LAGOS — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is resisting efforts by defendants in one of Nigeria’s biggest alleged illicit drug-production cases to secure bail.

The case involves 10 defendants — three Mexican nationals and seven Nigerians — accused of operating an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory hidden inside a forest in Ogun State.

The NDLEA alleges that the facility was capable of producing approximately 2,419.48 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, with the drugs and related materials valued at more than ₦480 billion on the international illicit market.

The alleged laboratory was located around the Mowe/Ijebu East area of Ogun State.

From transit route to production hub?

The significance of the case extends beyond the defendants. NDLEA officials have warned that international drug cartels appear increasingly interested in establishing production facilities in Nigeria rather than merely using the country as a transit route.

The agency has described the Ogun operation as a major example of an emerging transnational threat involving Nigerian criminal networks and foreign drug-production specialists.

The scale is disturbing. According to the prosecution, the operation involved industrial quantities of methamphetamine and precursor chemicals.

The public-health dimension

Methamphetamine is a powerful and highly addictive synthetic stimulant. The emergence of industrial-scale production in Nigeria could have consequences far beyond drug trafficking.

It raises concerns about addiction, youth health, organised crime, money laundering and the possible financing of other criminal networks.

The NDLEA has therefore presented the case not simply as a drug seizure but as part of a broader fight against international criminal syndicates.

Courtroom battle continues

The 10 defendants are facing an 11-count charge.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has already remanded them, while the court has inspected the alleged laboratory site as part of the proceedings.

The court has also granted the NDLEA permission to destroy the alleged laboratory, although certain disputed chemicals are to be preserved for evidentiary purposes.

The prosecution’s opposition to bail reflects the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.

But, as with every criminal proceeding, the defendants remain entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
