DSS and police investigate false claim that fintech giant was closing down as OPay warns against misinformation

A false social-media message claiming that OPay was preparing to shut down operations in Nigeria has triggered a security and financial misinformation investigation involving the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force.

The message circulated online claiming that OPay would stop operating from September 1 and that customers should withdraw their funds to avoid being stranded.

OPay has categorically denied the claim. The company said it remains operational and that the information did not originate from its official channels.

But the episode has exposed a more serious vulnerability in Nigeria’s increasingly digital financial economy.

Why a rumour about a fintech matters

For millions of Nigerians, fintech applications have become part of everyday financial life. People use them to receive salaries, transfer money, pay bills, run small businesses and receive payments from customers.

A false announcement suggesting that one of the country’s major digital financial platforms is shutting down could therefore trigger panic withdrawals and potentially disrupt commerce.

OPay said the DSS and police are investigating the origin of the message, while the company has supplied evidence to assist investigators. It has also indicated that it will pursue legal action against those responsible.

The digital misinformation problem

The incident illustrates a growing problem for Nigeria’s financial system. In the past, a false rumour might spread through markets, motor parks or informal networks.

Today, one fabricated graphic or social-media post can reach millions within hours. That makes financial institutions increasingly vulnerable to reputational attacks.

It also places a responsibility on customers: do not act on financial information simply because it is trending. Consumers should verify major announcements through official bank or fintech channels and regulatory sources before transferring or withdrawing money.

The wider lesson

Nigeria’s fintech revolution has created extraordinary opportunities, but it has also created new forms of systemic risk. Cybercrime is no longer restricted to stealing passwords or hacking accounts.

Information itself can become an economic weapon. The OPay episode demonstrates why financial literacy in the digital age must include the ability to distinguish an official announcement from manipulated information.
