The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has issued a stark warning to the public regarding a recent outbreak of Anthrax in neighbouring West African countries.
In light of this alarming development, Nigerians are strongly advised to refrain from consuming certain food items, including hides (known as “ponmo” locally), smoked meat, and bush meat, until the situation is brought under control.

The outbreak was initially detected near the northern border of Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Togo, which has raised concerns about the potential spread of the disease throughout the entire sub-region.
Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, has revealed that this bacterial disease, which affects both animals and humans, has already claimed numerous lives.
Anthrax is caused by spores that naturally exist in the soil and commonly affect domestic and wild animals.
Humans can contract Anthrax by coming into contact with infected animals or consuming contaminated animal products. Symptoms of the disease closely resemble those of the flu, including coughing, fever, and muscle aches. If left untreated, these symptoms can progress to severe lung problems, breathing difficulties, shock, and even death.
While Anthrax is not contagious and cannot be transmitted through close contact with an infected individual, it can be contracted by inhaling Anthrax spores or consuming contaminated animal products. Consequently, the Ministry emphasises the importance of avoiding contact with animals that have not been vaccinated against Anthrax and steering clear of any consumption of tainted or infected animal products, such as hides, meat, or milk.
