The union expressed outrage over Wike’s comment directed at Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye, in which he said he would have “shot” the broadcaster if possible.
NUJ President Alhassan Yahya said the statement was “reckless and violent,” warning that such rhetoric from a senior government official could intimidate journalists and erode public confidence in media independence.
The union noted it had initially withheld its reaction, expecting a retraction, but the absence of an apology suggests the comment may have been deliberate.
It called on the Federal Government to condemn the remark and reaffirm its commitment to protecting journalists, stressing that a free press is essential to democracy.
However, Wike’s aide, Lere Olayinka, dismissed the controversy, describing the statement as “hyperbolic” and taken out of context, adding that the minister had no intention of physical harm.
