The index case, a 53-year-old Chinese expatriate working with Lafarge in Akamkpa Local Government Area, reportedly arrived in Nigeria on March 17 before developing symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
In a rapid response, the state government identified and isolated 10 individuals who had contact with the patient. According to State Epidemiologist, Inyang Ekpenyong, none of the contacts has shown symptoms so far, while all are under close medical observation.
The Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, emphasized that the patient is stable and responding positively to treatment, reducing fears of escalation.
Backing the state’s efforts, Jide Idris, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, confirmed that coordinated emergency measures—including contact tracing, surveillance, and infection control—were immediately deployed.
Authorities insist there is no evidence of community transmission at this stage, urging residents to remain calm but vigilant by observing hygiene protocols such as regular handwashing and prompt reporting of symptoms.
