The Federal Government has expanded its flagship Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project by approving an additional 400 kilometres while officially naming the corridor after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a decision that has generated both commendation and political debate.

Minister of Works David Umahi described the highway as one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in modern Nigerian history, saying it would transform transportation, tourism, agriculture and industrial development across the southern coastline.
The additional sections are expected to improve connectivity between coastal communities and integrate major economic corridors stretching from Lagos through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
Economic Transformation
According to the Ministry of Works, the coastal highway is projected to reduce freight costs, shorten travel time and stimulate investments in logistics, manufacturing, housing and tourism.
Economists argue that efficient transport infrastructure remains one of Nigeria’s greatest constraints to competitiveness.
Businesses currently incur enormous transportation costs due to deteriorating road networks, congestion and high fuel prices.
Supporters therefore believe the project could significantly improve regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Critics Raise Questions
Despite widespread support for infrastructure investment, critics continue to question procurement procedures, compensation for affected property owners and overall project costs.
Some civil society organisations have called for greater transparency regarding financing arrangements, environmental impact assessments and contractor selection.
Others argue that naming the project after a sitting president could politicise what should remain a national infrastructure asset.
Government officials, however, insist the project will become one of Nigeria’s defining economic legacies.
A Test of Delivery
For many observers, the real measure of success will not be ceremonial announcements but timely completion, quality construction and measurable economic impact.
