Nigeria’s aviation industry is once again under public scrutiny after an Enugu Air Embraer E170 aircraft overshot the runway while landing at Benin Airport, prompting an immediate investigation by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). Authorities have confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated without injuries, but the incident has reignited discussions about runway safety, airport infrastructure, weather conditions and operational compliance across Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The aircraft, operating Flight 4264 from Lagos to Benin, reportedly experienced what aviation experts describe as a runway excursion—an event in which an aircraft leaves the paved runway during landing or takeoff. According to NSIB, the aircraft overran the end of Runway 05 at Benin Airport before coming to a stop beyond the runway safety area. The bureau has dispatched investigators to determine the sequence of events and identify any contributing factors.
Safety Response Prevents Casualties
Emergency response teams from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), airport firefighters and medical personnel responded immediately after the aircraft came to rest.
NSIB confirmed that all 63 passengers and five crew members were accounted for and safely evacuated. No fatalities or injuries were reported, while the aircraft was secured pending technical examination.
Enugu Air also assured passengers that flight schedules affected by the incident would be adjusted accordingly while investigations continue.
What Investigators Will Examine
Although aviation authorities have not speculated on the cause of the occurrence, investigators are expected to review several critical areas, including:
- Weather conditions at the time of landing.
- Runway surface condition and braking performance.
- Aircraft mechanical systems.
- Flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder information.
- Pilot decision-making and operational procedures.
- Air traffic control communications.
Under international aviation standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), NSIB’s responsibility is to determine the causal and contributory factors of accidents and serious incidents—not to assign legal blame. Its recommendations are aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.

Although runway excursions are among the most common types of aviation incidents globally, they do not necessarily indicate systemic safety failures. Aviation experts note that many such events result from a combination of weather conditions, runway contamination, aircraft speed, visibility or human factors.
The latest occurrence nevertheless comes as Nigerian regulators have intensified oversight of airline operations. In recent months, the NCAA and NSIB have investigated several operational incidents and reiterated their commitment to strengthening safety compliance across domestic airlines.
Industry analysts argue that continuous investment in airport infrastructure—including runway maintenance, modern navigation systems and emergency response capabilities—remains essential as passenger traffic continues to grow.

For many Nigerians, aviation remains the fastest and safest means of long-distance transportation, particularly given persistent insecurity on some highways.
Experts say transparent investigations and prompt publication of safety recommendations are critical to maintaining public confidence.
The NSIB has appealed to the public to avoid speculation while investigators complete their work, noting that a preliminary report will be released in accordance with international investigation procedures.
