Hundreds remain missing after catastrophic flooding and landslides along Nepal-Tibet border

A catastrophic flood disaster along the Nepal-China border has developed into one of the region’s worst natural disasters in recent years.
The death toll has risen sharply, with Nepalese authorities reporting hundreds of deaths and thousands missing. Al Jazeera reported that Nepal’s National Disaster Management Authority had recovered 673 bodies, while thousands remained missing.
The disaster has been linked to a glacial collapse and cascading flooding across Himalayan communities.
Rescue operations have been complicated by unstable terrain, damaged roads, landslides and fears of additional flooding.
A warning for Africa
Although the disaster is taking place in Asia, its lessons are global. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, while growing populations are putting more people in vulnerable areas.
Nigeria has already experienced devastating floods in recent years. The Himalayan disaster is therefore another reminder that disaster preparedness can no longer be treated as an occasional emergency response.
Early-warning systems save lives only when warnings reach communities — and communities have somewhere safe to go.
